Westerville Central High School football coach John Magistro is hoping to extend his career with the Warhawks a few more weeks.
Magistro, who announced earlier this season that this would be his final year with the program, will lead the Warhawks in their regular-season finale Friday, Oct. 27, at Olentangy.
Central, which is 4-5 overall, was projected to be ninth in the Division I, Region 2 computer ratings this week. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.
"Your team has to win, other teams have to lose, all that stuff," Magistro said. "When you end up at 5-5, which we have a chance to do, you don't know how it's going to be. You play to win because it's another football game. The seniors have to approach it as this is their last football game possibly. You always play for pride."
Magistro has said he will keep his options open to possibly remain in coaching next season.
Olentangy is 6-3 overall and needs a win to secure a Region 2 playoff berth. It was projected to be sixth in the region this week.
Both teams are 2-2 in the OCC-Buckeye Division.
Magistro was recognized before his team's 42-35 home win over Westerville South on Oct. 19.
"I'll never forget ... (being) down on the field with (my) family," he said. "I also had some great texts sent to me. I'll never erase them. They'll always be in there."
Allen Smith led the Warhawks, rushing for 276 yards and five touchdowns on 29 carries.
Central played most of the game without senior quarterback Isaiah Healy, who injured his right throwing shoulder on the first series and did not return. Magistro said Healy is doubtful for the Olentangy game.
Labronz Davis II replaced Healy and passed for 118 yards and a touchdown.
The Braves snapped a two-game losing streak with a 48-14 win over Westerville North on Oct. 20. Olentangy outgained North 348-194.
For the season, quarterback Riley Bruening has completed 117 of 177 passes for 1,432 yards with 15 touchdowns and four interceptions and rushed for 511 yards and six touchdowns on 111 carries.
Running back Ali Iverson has rushed for 559 yards and seven touchdowns on 131 carries.
"Olentangy is an excellent football team," Magistro said. "We have to go in there and play some awfully good football to beat them. Offensively, they do so many things. They run a real nice offense. A lot of their offense is similar to the things we do. The offense is probably the strength of their football team."
