One of the smallest players on the field had the biggest night for the Ready High School football team.
Matt Foley, a 5-foot-4, 136-pound sophomore running back, rushed for 240 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries to lead the Silver Knights past Bexley 35-7 on Oct. 26 at Fortress Obetz.
The Silver Knights improved to 7-3 and have clinched a berth in the Division V, Region 19 playoffs, which start Nov. 3.
“That (yardage) goes to the guys up front,” Foley said, referring to the offensive linemen. “Lance Gallion, Kyle Choulat, Ryan Spoon, Anthony Baum, Cade Canter and Charles Omameh were up there opening things up for me.”
The Silver Knights amassed 488 total yards, including 343 on the ground. Quarterback Austin Aiello had 44 yards on nine carries and Jaishon Norris added 31 yards on four carries.
Aiello also was 9-for-13 passing for 145 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Ryan Wood had two receptions for 63 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown, and Chase Jones had four receptions for 60 yards. Sam Hardenbergh added a 7-yard touchdown reception.
Bexley finished 0-10 for the first time in program history. That comes one season after finishing the regular season 10-0 for the first time.
The Lions’ only score came on a 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Anthony Welsh to Tyler Mitchell with 2 seconds left in the first half. Bexley trailed 21-7 at halftime.
“(The players) gave us everything we practiced all week and we executed well, but we have to put the ball in the end zone,” Bexley coach Nathan Castorena said. “We make one little mistake and we can’t finish the drive.”
Welsh was 9-for-22 passing for 102 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions and rushed for 44 yards on 12 carries. Mitchell had four receptions for 32 yards.
Bexley totaled 179 yards, with 89 coming on the ground and 90 through the air.
