The Big Walnut High School girls volleyball team is one win away from its first state championship.

Ranked seventh in the final state poll, the Golden Eagles rallied to beat second-ranked Kettering Alter 22-25, 19-25, 28-26, 25-23, 15-9 in a Division II state semifinal Nov. 10 at Wright State University.

Big Walnut improved to 25-3 and will face top-ranked Parma Padua Franciscan (24-4) in the state final at 5 p.m. Nov. 11. Alter finished 21-7.

Down two sets to none and trailing 20-14 in the third, the Golden Eagles went on a 14-6 run to win the set. After winning the fourth set by two points, they jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the final set and won by six points.

Machaela Podraza finished with 17 kills, 22 assists, 14 digs and four serving aces to lead Big Walnut, which advanced to a state final for the third time. Kaley Rammelsberg added 15 kills, Kelsie Imertreijs had 14 kills and 14 digs, Sammi Bickley had 26 assists and Meredith Thomas and Emily Vance both had 17 digs.

The Golden Eagles were state runners-up in 2010 and 1991.
