Ben Neer stepped down Nov. 17 as Thomas Worthington High School boys soccer coach.

Neer guided the Cardinals the last three seasons, compiling a 22-24-8 record.

“I just got married on Sept. 16, so it was a hectic season,” Neer said. “My wife, Danielle, and I want to start a family and spend more quality time together. I will do some club coaching, which means getting home earlier at nights than the high school season.”

The Cardinals finished 4-9-4 in Neer’s first season in 2015, but improved to 8-9-2 in 2016 before finishing 10-6-2 this season.

“We are grateful for the three years Ben invested in the program and wish him the best as he starts a new chapter in his life,” athletics director Jen Goebbel said. “We will be working toward getting a new coach in place as soon as possible.”

Goebbel will be accepting applications through Dec. 1 at jgoebbel@wscloud.org.

“It’s a good time to step aside because whoever takes over the program is going to be in good shape,” Neer said. “We should have seven starters back (next year) and 13 or 14 returnees.”
