The Hilliard Davidson High School bowling teams are hoping to gain momentum in the new year after a slow start to their season.
The Wildcats have had limited practices and matches because of renovation to Ten Pin Alley, their home facility, as well as bad weather.
According to ninth-year coach Adrian Jasinski, Ten Pin Alley will be available for practices and matches beginning Friday, Dec. 22. The Wildcats have been practicing at Sequoia Pro Bowl and Plain City Lanes.
"It's hard to go to a bowling alley that's maybe 20 to 30 minutes away to practice instead of going to one that's 10 to 15 minutes away," senior Chris Wourms said.
Davidson's match against Lancaster on Dec. 12 at Tiki Lanes was postponed because of bad weather.
The boys team is 1-2 overall and in the Central Ohio High School Bowling Conference-B Division.
The Wildcats lost to Darby 2,117-2,096 on Dec. 4 at Game of Western Columbus but defeated Columbus Academy 1,973-1,515 on Dec. 6 at HP Lanes.
Wourms led the team against Darby with a 515 two-game series, while junior Grayson Hollaway had a 429 series against Academy to lead the Wildcats.
Also back are seniors Jacob Shoemaker and Shubham Sinha, juniors Daniel McElfresh, Micah Neese and Korey Pummell and sophomore Dominic Williams.
Junior Chase Miles also is expected to contribute.
Last season in the Division I district tournament, Hollaway tied for 26th of 127 bowlers with a 603 three-game series and Wourms tied for 63rd (551).
"We have a lot of returning (bowlers) and we have a lot of new (bowlers)," Wourms said. "We actually have more new (bowlers) this season than the last three. I see a lot of potential with the new bowlers. We've had some of the new bowlers bowl varsity already."
The girls team has limited experience, but should be led by sophomore Reilly Wolfinger.
Davidson is 0-3 overall and in the COHSBC-B.
Wolfinger had a 271 two-game series and sophomore Ariel Meach rolled a 256 in a 1,559-1,354 loss to Darby on Dec. 4, while Wolfinger had a 300 series and junior Molly Cottrill rolled a 266 in a 1,319-1,181 loss to Academy on Dec. 6.
Also on the team are juniors Hannah Mathews and Tiffany Meach and sophomore Laurel King.
"They've all improved," Jasinski said. "They're at least an extra 10 to 15 pins on average. The girls are doing really well."
Boys basketball team struggling for wins
The boys basketball team entered its game against Lancaster on Dec. 19 looking to end a four-game losing streak.
The Wildcats were 1-4 overall before facing the Golden Gales and are 0-2 in the OCC-Central Division. They will be seeking their first league win when they travel to Central Crossing on Friday, Dec. 22.
Davidson lost to host Upper Arlington 45-27 on Dec. 15 in a league game after losing at Delaware 45-37 on Dec. 12. Patrick Preece scored nine points against the Golden Bears, while Gage Keys scored 10 points against the Pacers.
Girls basketball team to face Comets
The girls basketball team will play host to Central Crossing in an OCC-Central game Friday, Dec. 22.
Davidson then will prepare to face Gahanna in the Jeff Sheets Holiday Classic on Dec. 29 at Teays Valley.
The Wildcats were 4-3 overall before playing Lancaster on Dec. 19 and are 1-2 in the OCC-Central.
Davidson lost to visiting Upper Arlington 40-36 in a league contest Dec. 15 after beating Bradley 30-19 on Dec. 9 at home. Emily Simon scored 14 points against the Bears, while Brianna O'Connor had seven points against the Jaguars.
Gymnasts place fifth in home meet
The gymnastics team played host to the annual Hilliard Invitational on Dec. 16, tying Cincinnati Turpin for fifth (125 points) of 14 teams, behind champion Dresden Tri-Valley (131.15).
Nikia Scurlock finished eighth in the all-around (33.075), seventh on uneven bars (8.15) and tied for ninth on vault (8.3), while Mallory Berthel placed eighth on vault (8.325) and tied for 10th on floor exercise (8.55).
