The first hat trick of Carter Patchett’s prep career came at an opportune time for the Dublin Jerome High School hockey team.
Patchett scored all of the Celtics’ goals in a 3-1 win over Olentangy Liberty in the championship game of the Blue Jackets Cup on Feb. 11 at OhioHealth Ice Haus.
Jerome, which improved to 26-4-3-2, won its second consecutive Cup title and eighth overall.
“The boys worked the puck low and we were able to find shots at the net,” Patchett said. “I was lucky to get three there. It was the definition of a championship game.”
Top-seeded Jerome took a 1-0 lead on Patchett’s first goal off a pass from Nick Augenstein with 11 minutes, 2 seconds left in the first period.
Liberty, which was the second seed and dropped to 25-6-3, tied the score with 13:53 left in the second period on a goal by Kevin Springfield.
With 8:32 remaining in the third period, Patchett scored what proved to be the game-winner as he was losing his balance. His final goal came with 5:42 left off a pass from Augenstein.
“This is (Cup title) No. 8, and everyone is a little better,” Jerome coach Pat Murphy said.More video •Patchett's second goal •Patchett's third goal
The Celtics and Patriots have met five times this season, with Jerome winning three of the matchups.
“We’d have a turnover and they’d go down and score,” Liberty coach Jack Hoogeveen said. “We hung in there. You’ve got to give (Jerome) a lot of credit.”
