Westerville Central High School senior Thomas Hickman achieved a career milestone Feb. 24 while leading the boys basketball team to a 47-39 win over Delaware in the first round of the Division I district tournament.

Hickman reached 1,000 career points on a basket in the lane with 4 minutes, 51 seconds remaining in the game. His teammates greeted him near midcourt following the basket.

“It was really cool,” Hickman said. “I was just grateful that I could be in this position and it’s because of them with all the hard work. They push me in practice every day.”

He finished with a game-high 21 points despite playing most of the second half with a bandage above his right eye. He suffered a cut after colliding with an opponent early in the third quarter.

The 11th-seeded Warhawks play host to 24th-seeded Whitehall in the second round March 1.
