The Olentangy High School gymnastics team displayed its depth during the district meet Feb. 24 at Worthington Kilbourne.

However, it wasn’t nearly enough for the Braves to overtake Thornville Sheridan, which posted a 145.425 to defend its district title. Olentangy was runner-up (139.5) and Hilliard Bradley placed third (135.425) as the top three teams advanced to the team state meet March 2 at Bradley.

The Braves will be making their third consecutive state appearance as a team, while the Jaguars will be making their first.

Last season, Sheridan scored 138.65 to win the district title. The Generals had five of the top six finishers in the all-around to cruise to this year’s championship.

“I knew Sheridan would likely win the title again, but, boy, did they put up a very impressive number,” Olentangy coach Misty Lloyd-Matthews said. “They have a very strong team. What we did was also impressive because we don’t have anyone (competing in all four events) and still finished second as a team.

“We had a large number of girls who had solid performances in their two or three events and it was enough. It was a total team effort. I’m so proud of them.”

Each of the past three years, Bradley finished fourth at district to fall one spot shy of state.

“(We have) been knocking on the door for several years and I’m so happy they finally made it in this year,” Jaguars coach Carol Eskay said. “They’ve worked extremely hard and they found a way to get over the hump now.”

The top eight finishers in each event and the all-around advanced to the individual state meet March 3 at Bradley.

Dublin Coffman senior Bethany Hurt repeated as the all-around champion (37.0) after winning titles on floor exercise (9.45) and balance beam (9.35). She tied for second on vault (9.15) and tied for third on uneven bars (9.05).

Westerville Central’s Gianna Brooks also tied for second on vault (9.15) and Hilliard Darby’s Chloe Shook placed third on floor (9.25).
