Pending school board approval, Derek Oney will be the Pickerington High School North wrestling team’s next coach.

Oney, a Pickerington resident who coached Marion-Franklin for seven seasons, replaces Jake Kuhner, who stepped down after three seasons to devote more time to his new job as football coach at Watkins Memorial.

“(Oney) is an experienced wrestler and an experienced wrestling coach with a lot of passion for kids and wrestling,” North athletics director Molly Feesler said. “We are happy to have a coach of his caliber at Pickerington North. We feel he can continue to grow the program and will be a great asset to our athletic program.”

Oney was the Division I state runner-up at 152 pounds in 1995 as a senior at Alliance. He wrestled at Ohio University and was an assistant coach at Mount Union from 1998-2002 before joining Marion-Franklin’s program as an assistant.

Oney succeeded Lenny Bell as Red Devils coach in 2005 and held the position until stepping down after the 2011-12 season.

Kuhner, who was defensive coordinator for the North football team last fall, was hired at Watkins Memorial in January.
