Throughout the regular season, defensive issues were among the Ready High School baseball team's biggest deficiencies.
That the Silver Knights committed just one error in their Division III district tournament opener against Mount Gilead on May 8 was among the contributing factors in helping them win their second game of the season.
A strong pitching performance from junior Cade Dent also helped.
The 18th-seeded Knights beat 19th-seeded Mount Gilead 7-1 at home to improve to 2-17 and advance to a second-round game May 10 at third-seeded Fredericktown.
"All in all, we played great (against Mount Gilead)" coach Bruce Lunsford said. "(We had) a lot of stolen bases. I give a lot of credit to my (junior varsity) boys with the energy they come with on the bench."
Dent allowed seven hits and gave up his only run in the seventh inning, and freshman Luke Jones went 2-for-4.
The Ready-Fredericktown winner plays 10th-seeded Grandview or 11th-seeded Marion Pleasant in a district semifinal Tuesday, May 15, at a site to be announced, with the winner to face top-seeded West Jefferson, seventh-seeded Marion Elgin, 13th-seeded Galion Northmor or 17th-seeded Madison Plains in a district final Thursday, May 17, at a site to be announced.
The district champion plays in a regional semifinal May 24.
