New Albany High School’s Robert Cash won the singles championship and St. Charles’ Jack Dabek and Reese Yakubov won the doubles title in the Division I boys tennis district tournament May 19 at Olympic Indoor Tennis.

The second day of the tournament was moved to Olympic from Upper Arlington because of impending bad weather. The first day of the tournament was May 17 at Hilliard Bradley.

The top four finishers in singles and doubles advanced to state May 25 and 26 at Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.

Dabek, who will be making his third consecutive state appearance in doubles, and Yakubov defeated New Albany’s Devin Boyer and Nathan Jose 7-5, 6-1 in the final. Dabek qualified for state the past two seasons with 2017 St. Charles graduate Evan Yakubov, who is Reese’s older brother.

“Reese and I have been hitting together at (Ohio State) for the past couple months working on a lot of doubles drills, and I think that’s helped,” Dabek said. “We complement each other well.”

In the semifinals of doubles play, Dabek and Yakubov defeated Olentangy Orange’s Alex Heiden and Jordan Phelps 6-2, 6-3, and Boyer and Jose beat UA’s Josh Cole and Will Reynolds 7-6, 6-2.

Cole and Reynolds beat Heiden and Phelps 6-4, 6-4 in the third-place match.

Cash cruised through the singles bracket, defeating New Albany teammate Ryan Mudre 6-0, 6-0 in a semifinal and Olentangy’s Stu Brdicka 6-2, 6-1 in the final.

Brdicka defeated Lancaster’s Colton Clark 6-3, 6-1 in the other semifinal, and Clark beat Mudre in the third-place match. The score of the consolation match was 6-7, 6-2 when Mudre retired because of an injury.
