Kimball Johnson is moving up in the Wellington School coaching ranks.

Formerly a middle school girls and boys basketball coach at Wellington, Johnson has been named varsity girls coach, according to athletics director Lindsey Smith.

Johnson succeeds Danielle Fleming, who headed the girls program last winter before announcing in May that she was stepping down to become an assistant at Southern Arkansas University.

“Upon meeting with a number of candidates, it became apparent (Johnson) was the right individual for the position,” Smith said in an email to players and parents in the Wellington program. “Coach (Johnson) has been with the Wellington basketball program for the past five years and has a tremendous understanding of the community and our mission as an athletic program.”

According to Smith, Johnson has an overall coaching record of 106-34 in 12 seasons, having posted a winning record in all but one season.

“He’s thrilled for this new opportunity and is eager to begin working with our players in a new capacity,” Smith said.

Wellington finished 15-10 and reached a Division IV district semifinal in its only season under Fleming. She had guided Licking Heights to a 29-18 record in two seasons prior to taking over the Jaguars.
