Abby Steiner has been named Gatorade Ohio Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year for the second time.

The 2018 Dublin Coffman High School graduate was announced as the 2017-18 honoree by The Gatorade Company on June 21.

Steiner won a pair of titles in the Division I state meet held June 1 and 2 at Ohio State, giving her nine outdoor state championships for her career to go with seven indoor state titles.

On June 1, she ran 11.47 seconds in the 100 meters and 23.17 in the 200 during the preliminaries to break her own state records. The next day, she eclipsed her own marks again by running 11.38 to win her third consecutive championship in the 100 and 22.73 to capture her fourth title in the 200.

Steiner also ran on state championship 800 relays in 2016 and 2017, but an injury during this year’s regional meet limited her to two state events.

“I’ll probably never have another athlete like that,” Coffman coach Greg King said. “She’s just got that switch that she flips whether it’s athletically or in class when she has something she wants to accomplish. … She’s got amazing physical talent, one of the best work ethics I’ve seen and might be the fiercest competitor I’ve ever had.”

Steiner, who has signed to run track and play soccer at the University of Kentucky, also was named Gatorade Ohio Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year as a sophomore for the 2015-16 school year.

She is a finalist for the 2017-18 Gatorade National Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year award.
