The Columbus Academy boys golf team entered the season with high expectations after winning its eighth state championship a year ago.

The Vikings rallied from a four-stroke deficit after the first round of the Division II state tournament to finish with a 596 and cruise past opening-round leader Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin (606) for the title.

"We mention last year," fifth-year coach Craig Yakscoe said. "It's not something that we'll forget. We're still going to celebrate it and learn from it and move on as well. We're not going to rest on it."

Junior Ali Khan again should be the No. 1 golfer after he shot a 145 at state to tie for fourth of 71 golfers and earn first-team all-state honors.

Junior Griffin Mitchell carded a 151 to tie for ninth and earn second-team all-state, and junior Kahmar Byers tied for 36th (163).

"We still talk about last year a little bit just to reference it and to build off of it most importantly," Byers said. "We like to build off our best results. We just try to stay in the moment, work on what we're doing and focus on our next tournament."

Junior Matt Cammeyer also returns and should be the No. 4 golfer.

Freshmen Russell Ahmed and Aditya Reddy have been competing for the fifth spot, according to Yakscoe.

Juniors Anay Reddy, Miles Razek and Ryan Wahl also are looking to contribute.

Academy is looking to replace 2018 graduate Cole Walter, who finished sixth (146) at state to earn second-team all-state honors. Walter also was a member of the 2014 state title team.

"We lost Cole and Sam (Vogel), but I knew we had some upcoming juniors and I knew we had those freshmen coming in who were going to push them," Yakscoe said. "It's pretty exciting."

The Vikings also are looking to defend their MSL-Ohio Division title after going 11-1 last season to finish ahead of runner-up Bexley (10-2).

Academy placed first (298) ahead of the runner-up Lions (300) in the MSL-Ohio preseason tournament Aug. 7 at Westchester. Khan led the Vikings with a 72.

The Vikings opened the season Aug. 4 by finishing third (310) behind champion Mason (296) in the 18-team Cincinnati Sycamore Invitational at Blue Ash Golf Course. Khan tied for third with a 72.

"This year is going to be a little harder because it's mostly us juniors and a couple freshmen," Byers said. "We're just going to have as much fun as we did last year and hopefully we can follow that same path and win the state again this year."

Ratliff to again lead girls tennis team

Sophomore Sydni Ratliff is looking to build off a strong first season with the girls tennis team.

Ratliff came within one win of earning the Division II state singles title, falling to Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown's Nicole Gillinov 6-2, 6-4 in the final.

Her offseason included competing in several United States Tennis Association national events.

Academy also is looking to contend for the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association Division II state team title after falling to Hathaway Brown 3-0 in the final last season.

"Our goal is to get to the team state tournament," fourth-year coach Tom Haddow said. "We likely have to go through Wellington and CSG."

Senior Himaja Reddy, who teamed with 2018 graduate Georgia Tuckerman to split a pair of doubles matches last season at state, should play singles.

Haddow expects freshman Carmen Merkel to play singles. Other key players should be seniors Maddie Tuckerman and Haylee White, junior Alex Graham and sophomore Lauren Motta.

"Our lineup will work itself out," Haddow said. "I have some girls who can play doubles better than other girls."

The Vikings will look to defend their MSL-Ohio title after going 6-0 last season to edge runner-up Wellington (5-1).

Academy opened Aug. 13 against Watterson and begins MSL-Ohio play Sept. 4 at Worthington Christian.
