The Pickerington High School North football team rallied to beat visiting Dublin Jerome 35-28 on Aug. 31.
After taking a 21-7 lead into halftime, the Panthers saw the Celtics rally to take a 28-21 lead early in the fourth quarter before putting together a rally of their own.
North quarterback Mike Lowery connected with Tim Cheatwood on a 19-yard touchdown pass with 7 minutes, 20 seconds remaining and later hit Jaylon Baylor for a 29-yard touchdown with 2:35 left to complete the comeback.
Cheatwood’s interception in the closing seconds ended the Celtics’ potential game-tying drive.
“I told our kids, good teams have to win games like that and that’s what we did,” North coach Nate Hillerich said. “You have to be able to deal with adversity. It’s going to come at some point and we played a great football team. It was just one of those games. I’m drained. It was a long game."
Lowery, who played at North as a freshman before competing for Gahanna the past two seasons, completed 28 of 42 passes for 331 yards and two touchdowns as North improved to 2-0.
The Celtics slipped to 1-1.
Quarterback Hayden Schell led Jerome’s second-half rally, as he scored on a 1-yard run and connected with Trey Ballengee (30 yards) and Ryan Keys (49 yards) for touchdowns to give the Celtics a 28-21 lead with 9:21 left.
Schell completed 20 of 37 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns.
Jerome kept the game close for most of the first half, led by Schell, whose 15-yard touchdown run pulled his team within 14-7 with 7:15 left in the first half.
North, however, added to its lead late in the half when Idris Lawrence scored his second touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run, giving the Panthers a 21-7 lead.
Touchdown runs by Baylor (5 yards) and Lawrence (10 yards) staked North to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter.
