First-year Dublin Scioto High School girls soccer coach Kevin Masterson admits it was a little awkward returning to Worthington Kilbourne for the first time since coaching in the Wolves' boys program.
Masterson enjoyed a triumphant return, as the Irish defeated the host Wolves 1-0 on Sept. 20 in an OCC-Cardinal Division contest.
"Being on the boys side of it, I knew it was one that everyone marked on their schedule and it lived up to it," said Masterson, who spent the previous six years with the Kilbourne boys, serving as the junior varsity A coach and a varsity assistant the last five seasons after coaching the j.v. B team in 2012.
"It was a tough battle. I threw off a few people coming in in green. It was a lot of fun. It was nice to see some people I haven't seen, but it felt good to have the girls play well and come out of there with a win."
Allie Vogel scored and goalkeeper Brianna Rogers had 10 saves for Scioto, which was 5-2-3 overall and 2-1-1 in the OCC-Cardinal before playing Thomas Worthington on Sept. 25. The Irish were 5-0-1 in their previous six games, with the tie coming against league foe Hilliard Darby (2-all on Sept. 13).
Scioto defeated Cincinnati Landmark Christian 2-0 on Sept. 22 as Rachel Fullerton and Tiffany Trinh scored and Rogers and Abbey Topetzes each had three saves.
The Irish visit Hilliard Bradley on Tuesday, Oct. 2, before closing out league play at home against Jerome on Oct. 9. The Celtics were 4-0 in the league before playing Bradley on Sept. 25.
"I really like where we're going," Masterson said. "We're starting to understand some concepts and we're starting to connect and move the ball. We're not where we want to be quite yet, but I love where we're at."
Girls volleyball team seeking league title
The girls volleyball team entered the second half of league play in position to win the OCC-Cardinal title.
The Irish were 11-3 overall and 7-1 in the league before playing Delaware on Sept. 25. Kilbourne also entered the week 7-1 in the league. The teams meet Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Kilbourne with the Wolves looking to avenge a 14-25, 21-25, 25-19, 26-24, 15-11 loss to the Irish on Aug. 29.
