Jaylen Gilbert rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown and passed for 106 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Centennial High School football team defeated host East 33-6 in a City League-North Division game Sept. 28 at Harley Field.

Receiver Marquese Scott caught three passes for 89 yards, including touchdowns covering 40 and 43 yards. He also rushed for a 30-yard touchdown as the Stars improved to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.

“I thought our defense played well for the better part of the game, and Marquese showed his speed with a couple of big plays for us,” Centennial coach Donte Goosby said. “Luchene Davis did a better job running the ball in the second half when he stopped dancing. He’s a powerful runner when he goes straight ahead.

“It was nice to see Jaylen running downhill a few times. He played well. We have a lot of weapons and that shows up when we execute.”

Davis finished with 96 yards rushing on 14 carries.

East got on the scoreboard when quarterback Deo-Samuel Pierre scored on a 23-yard run early in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers were unable to move the ball after recovering the subsequent onside kick.

“We made way too many mistakes,” said East coach Wes Edwards, whose team fell to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the City-North with a loss in its homecoming game. “You can’t have the number of dropped passes, penalties and overall lack of execution in blocking and tackling and expect to have any type of success. But we’ll get back to the drawing board as coaches and players and see what we can do from here.”

Davis put the Stars ahead on a 38-yard run early in the second quarter, and Scott caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Gilbert on the final play of the first half to take a 14-0 lead.

After Centennial scored on its first possession of the second half on Scott’s 30-yard run down the left sideline, Scott caught a 23-yard touchdown pass over the middle to make it 27-0 later in the third quarter.

Gilbert was 5-for-12 passing, but the Stars rushed for 234 of their 340 total yards.

Jauron Armstrong rushed for 78 yards and Pierre added 51 as East gained 151 of its 210 yards on the ground.
