After watching leads disappear in the fourth quarter three times this season, the Dublin Scioto High School football team made sure it would survive this one Friday.

The difference would come from the senior Eric Stamets, who got a hand on Chris McCluney's extra-point attempt on what would have been Westerville North's game-tying point with 3 minutes, 22 seconds left to play.

With a 17-16 victory, the Irish snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the OCC-Cardinal Division.

"On their first touchdown, I was close to blocking it so I knew how to adjust and new I could get through the opening," Stamets said. "I just didn't expect to get in that fast."

Scioto quarterback Charlie Suich seemed to demoralize the Warriors with a 58-yard touchdown run for a 17-3 lead with five minutes left in the third quarter.

But the Irish watched that cushion quickly disappear thanks to two fumbles that gave North the short field in the fourth quarter.

McCluney made Scioto suffer with two quick scoring drives that included a 19-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Macauley and a 10-yard run that capped a five-play 38-yard drive.

"Our kids did a good job of fight back and tried to make things happen in the second half," said North coach Chad Williams, whose team dropped to 2-4 and 1-2. "We knew we needed to hang in there. We made some adjustments in the second half and just battled."

For Scioto, the victory came despite three turnovers and seven penalties for 49 yards.

"I'm sure in the fourth quarter there was a little bit of, 'Here we go, again,' for us," Scioto coach Karl Johnson said. "Our defense was in a bind many times in the second half, but we continued to respond."

Suich was efficient with both his arm and legs.

The junior completed 13 of 19 passes for 97 yards and an interception and rushed 18 times for 65 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown run that ended Scioto's first drive of five plays and 57 yards.
Scioto's star rusher and defensive back Bradley McDougald, an Ohio State recruit, and senior receiver Ayodeji Olatoye sat the bench for the third consecutive game for unspecified reasons.
