Gabriel Ybarra creates Gulf Coast menu at relocated Vonn Jazz Lounge

Chef Gabriel Ybarra is confident his symphony of flavors complement the complex music arrangements at the relocated Vonn Jazz Lounge.

The larger space, in the former Amazon Grill site in Crosswoods, not only allows music lovers more room to groove, it gives Ybarra a chance to show off his chops.

"It's definitely Gulf Coast cuisine," he said. "That's what I do."

For example, there's the fried green tomato napoleon with layers of avocado, the muffaletta sandwich and the crawfish etouffee pizza. Entrees range from $17 to $27.

Ybarra earned a solid reputation on the fine-dining circuit, working at Handke's Cuisine and then Handke's Table, which he owned for a short time. He then left central Ohio for a country club in the Cleveland area. After three
years there, he returned to Greater Columbus, consulting on local menus.

He brought on sous chef Brian Parker, formerly of Spice, the Refectory, M and the Bar of Modern Art, better known as BoMA.

Yvonne Sarber, who worked with Ybarra at Handke's, opened Vonn a year ago at 2151 E. Dublin-Granville Road. It is being transformed into a blues bar.

The new place occupies more than 7,000 square feet of space at 245 E. Campus View Blvd. The dining room has seating for 80. Vonn is open for lunch and dinner hours daily. For more information, call 614-431-5299.

In other news from Crosswoods, Chutneys has opened -- finally.

After threatening to open this past winter, the restaurant never got off the ground. Now, under partial new ownership, the Indian eatery is operating for lunch and dinner hours six days a week, closed Monday.

Co-founder Aroon Nagi is out of the picture, replaced by the Hunaman Kanaparthi, who joins original investor Kishore Mamillapalli at Chutnys, 195 E. Campus View Blvd.

The restaurant has a wide selection of north and southern Indian dishes, as well as an assortment of Indochinese fare. It also has one of the most extensive offerings of dosas in central Ohio.

Most dishes are in the $6.95 to $11.95 range. A liquor license is not yet in place.

Georgetti's Pizza quietly took over the Moonbaby's spot several months ago at 2943 Olentangy River Road in the University City shopping center.

Owner Matthew George said his pizzeria offers a straightforward pie with a medium-thick crust, using hand-tossed dough, a tarter style of tomato sauce and 100-percent cheese. Single slices are available at lunch. One of
the biggest sellers is the "pig skin" -- pepperoni, sausage, ham and bacon.
