A solid defensive showing by the Reynoldsburg High School football team was exactly what coach Steve Evans needed to earn his first victory with the Raiders.

Reynoldsburg held Newark without a touchdown as in a 10-3 victory.

"It feels absolutely wonderful,"said Evans, whose team improved to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the OCC-Ohio Division. "We just didn't know how to finish before. Tonight we were able to finish. Our defense played outstanding.
Newark fell to 1-4 and 0-2.

The Raiders allowed only 173 yards of total offense and was led by defensive tackle Roosevelt Nix, who had 8.5 tackles (seven for a loss, including 1.5 sacks) and a pass broken up.

Linebacker Patrick Gundelfinger also had a sack and an interception. Linebacker Huss Trowery also picked off a pass.

Reynoldsburg opened the scoring on a 35-yard field goal by Taylor Gustavson with five minutes left in the first quarter.

Setting up the five-minute drive were runs by Trowery and Rodney Smith.

Smith scored the game's only touchdown on a 4-yard run with 4:52 left in the second quarter. He rushed for 60 yards on nine carries.

The four-minute scoring drive was highlighted with a 14-yard run by quarterback J.C. Gibson and a 22-yard run by Smith. Gibson finished with 24 yards passing and 15 carries for 61 yards.

Newark's only points came on the opening drive of the second half. A drive that featured the running of Timothy Williams put the Wildcats in range for Jordan Spurlock, who hit a 37-yard field goal.

Williams finished with 82 yards on 24 carries.

"Turnovers at the worst possible times" played a significant role in the outcome, said Newark coach Jeff Buchanan. "We didn't tackle as well as we can, and we didn't block as well."

Both teams return to OCC play Friday with the Raiders traveling to Pickerington North and Newark playing at Groveport.

Pickerington North fell to 3-2 and 1-1 with a 38-7 loss to Pickerington Central on Friday. Groveport is 1-4 and 0-2 with a 14-7 loss to Grove City.
