Running back Marcus Penn of the Whetstone High School football team ran for 300 yards and six touchdowns as the Braves beat host Centennial 53-0 on Friday in the regular-season finale.

Whetstone used a powerful rushing attack to total 434 yards in sloppy playing conditions as it finished 7-3 overall and 4-3 in the City League-North Division.

Penn and the Braves' offense set the tone early. The junior ran for 32 yards on Whetstone's first play, then scored on a 25-yard run to give Whetstone a 7-0 lead less than one minute into the game. The Braves had 274 yards rushing in the first half.

"It felt really good, the offensive line blocked hard and we saw a lot of hard work pay off," said Penn, who usually plays wide receiver. "We stayed focused and stayed together as a family to make this a good
season, and I'm really looking forward to playing running back next year."

Penn exhibited strong play at linebacker as part of a Braves defense that held Centennial to 93 yards total offense. In the second quarter, Penn intercepted a pass by Wesley Russell and returned it 26 yards to set
up Whetstone's fourth touchdown. Late in the third, defensive back Juan Thomas scored on a 50-yard fumble return.

The teams threw a combined three passes in the game. Braves sophomore quarterback Quinton Wright threw one pass, an 11-yard touchdown to junior Joe Tuttle.

Tuttle finished with 83 yards rushing on 11 carries.

"This has been a surreal season for us and it's good to see us end it this way," Whetstone coach Jim Worden said. "I'm really proud of the way our guys played up front. We've got four seniors on that line and they
did a great job paving the way for our backs."

Centennial struggled to mount an offensive attack, a problem that has plagued it throughout a season in which it finished 0-10 and 0-7.

There were a few bright spots for Centennial. Sophomore running back Taylor Wicks rushed for 36 yards. Junior Brian Hummell recovered a fumble by Wright early in the game, and senior Antwoine Meyers recorded a sack.
