To the Editor:

At the Clintonville Area Commission meeting June 2, it was reported that the proposed planted medians on High Street at Dunedin Road and Indianola Avenue at Melrose Avenue are in the design stage.

Upon asking the estimated cost -- whether $100,000, $250,000 or $500,000 -- finally someone said that it would be under $100,000.

However, pages 6 and 34 of the CAC Mobility Framework Study of June 2015 list the estimated cost of each as $250,000, and the city of Columbus Department of Development 2017-19 Future Selected Capital Projects list places the estimated cost as $300,000 for both.

A median on a single block of a busy street introduces issues for emergency vehicles, snow removal, street cleaning and general maintenance and contributes to driver confusion and distraction.

Why medians? The primary reason generally cited is that they are traffic-calming.

Seems like a high price when other alternatives exist.
