Bexley High School wrestlers Herb Porter and Tommy Bolon advanced to the Division II district tournament Friday and Saturday at Heath.

At the sectional last Saturday at Licking Heights, Porter lost to Buckeye Valley's Christopher Halmbacher 9-5 in the final at 215 pounds to move to 16-9. Bolon defeated DeSales' Joseph Lyberger 9-5 in the third-place match at 145 to move to 18-9.

The top four from each weight class advanced. The top four at district will qualify to state March 5-7 at Ohio State.

"The key for Tommy and Herb next week is handling the nerves," said coach Jason Barnett, whose team finished seventh (80.5 points) behind champion DeSales (259) at district. "This is the first time at the district meet for Tommy and the second time there for Herb. Nerves can take their toll."

Bolon will open district against McConnelsville Morgan's Tyler Johnson, who placed second in the Meadowbrook sectional and is 24-11. Porter will open against Granville's Colin Bomprezzi, who is 40-11 and was third at the Amanda-Clearcreek sectional.

Dan Dorsam (112), Latrail Bowman (152) and Mikey Penn (189) placed fifth and are alternates for district.

•The 200-yard freestyle and 200 medley relays had the top performances for the girls swimming team at the Division II district meet last Friday at Ohio State.

Anna Bauer, Amanda Young, Allie Cardenas and Ranen Jones dropped nearly four seconds to place sixth in the 200 free relay (1 minute, 45.66 seconds) and Young, Bryee Wernicke, Cardenas and Bauer were seventh in the 200 medley relay (2:01.1). Neither relay made it to state, however.

"You definitely have to trust each other," Bauer said. "You know each one of these girls is going to go their hardest. If one person doesn't go all out, we're not going to make our time."

The girls team finished 11th (69 points) behind champion New Albany (527) and the boys team was 10th (78) behind champion New Albany (353), also with no state qualifiers. This is the first season the Lions haven't had a state qualifier since 2003.

For the boys team, Gus Martin, Tim Beck, Ari Schwartz and Tyler Johnson were ninth in the 400 free relay (3:28.67), Johnson, Hayden Humphrey, Schwartz and Beck were ninth in the 200 medley relay (1:47.6) and Beck was ninth in the 100 free (51.36).

Beck dropped nearly a second from his sectional time in the 100 free.

"I came out of the sectional tied with (Wheelersburg's Douglas Gentile) and they put me in the second heat instead of the first," Beck said. "I wanted to come back and beat him."

Gentile finished 12th (51.84).

The Lions dropped time in 25 of the 28 events at the district meet.

"I'm just really proud of this whole group," coach Natalie Mossman said. "They think more about the relays than they do about themselves. That just speaks about how close this group is."

The boys will lose all but two of its district qualifiers in seniors Beck, Johnson, Martin, Schwartz, Eric Wittig and Adam Gray, as well as Ben Hoover, Nick Koetz and Daniel Zhou.

The boys finished third (156) behind New Albany (279) and Columbus Academy (238.5) in the 17-team sectional at Academy on Feb. 14 and third (179) behind champion Academy (306) at MSL meet Jan. 31 at Academy.

The girls team, which finished fifth (78) behind champion New Albany (372) at the sectional meet and third (179) behind champion Academy (305) in the MSL, will lose seniors Britney Barnes, Jenna Bauer and Shelby Young.

Top expected returnees are juniors Cardenas, Wernicke and Jones and sophomores Amanda Young, Bauer and Kathleen Dorman. Expected back for the boys team are junior William Schwartz, sophomores Humphreys and Jake Block and freshmen Austin Howard and Logan Pedon.
