During the 2016 Greater Bexley Clean-Up Saturday, April 16, residents are encouraged to rid their residences and garages of unwanted materials, while volunteers will pick up litter and assist with recycling.

"Over the years, the hundreds of volunteers who have come out for the Greater Bexley Clean-Up have made a noticeable difference by making our community cleaner," Bexley Mayor Ben Kessler said in a news release. "The Clean-Up is also a convenient and responsible way to tidy up your closet or attic and support the good work of community organizations such as Goodwill, AARP and the Bexley Public Library."

Residents can drop off items from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Gateway South Lot at the corner of Main Street and Parkview Avenue. Volunteers will help unload. The following items will be accepted:

* Goodwill Columbus will collect clothing, household goods and working electronics. Donations help fund programs for individuals with disabilities and those facing other barriers in Franklin County.

* Vehicle and household batteries, CFL bulbs, scrap metal and non-working electronics will be accepted for recycling. Appliances containing gas, propane or Freon cannot be accepted.

* Building materials will be accepted by Habitat for Humanity.

* Personal documents will be collected for shredding and disposal by Shred-it, sponsored by the American Association of Retired Persons.

* The Developmental Assets Resource Network will accept bicycles for distribution to families in need.

* The Friends of the Bexley Library will take used books for the organization's annual book sale to benefit the library.

Volunteers from local Scout troops, Capital University athletic teams, fraternities and sororities and other community organizations will canvass neighborhoods to pick up litter from streets, alleys, parks and the banks of Alum Creek. Volunteers can sign up in advance at Bexley.org/cleanup. Volunteers can then check in at Pumphouse Park, at the corner of Main Street and Alum Creek Drive, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday to pick up supplies.

All volunteers will receive a free T-shirt and are invited to enjoy free food, games and music at Pumphouse Park immediately following the event. City officials will grill hot dogs.

Anyone who is unable to drop off items Saturday can visit a separate drop-off area at the rear of Bexley City Hall, 2242 E. Main St. Items can be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Friday, April 15, but no unloading assistance will be available.
