Art Roehrenbeck might have things lined up well in his first season as coach of the St. Charles Preparatory School hockey team.

Art Roehrenbeck might have things lined up well in his first season as coach of the St. Charles Preparatory School hockey team.

The Cardinals return 11 seniors and several experienced veterans from a team that finished 12-22-1 last season.

"The team seems to have come a long way," said Roehrenbeck, a former assistant who replaced Troy Appleby in May after one season with the program. "We had a lot of first-year varsity players last year and I think we're going to improve in our overall team defense this year."

St. Charles returns its leading scorer in senior forward Charles Lacasse, who had 24 goals. Junior forward Tyler Brady had nine goals and senior forward Joe Sweeney scored six times.

"Everyone is older and we only lost a few seniors. We should be better due to the experience we bring back," said Sweeney, who is a four-year varsity player. "We need to work together as a team. Everyone has to play hard and put their hearts into the game."

Other returning seniors include defenseman Vince D'Antonio forward Chris Jeric, defenseman Matt Larkin, goalie Connor Lenhart, defenseman Brian Lewis, defenseman Iassac Oyer and defenseman Paul Weisenbach. Forward Tony Francescon and defenseman Matt Kinkopf are both first-year seniors.

"We have new coaches and a lot of people back. We only had (four) seniors last year.

Everyone is focused and wants to do well," Larkin said. "Teamwork is important. We're really talented as individuals, but we need to work together and bring our talents together."

Junior defenseman Alex Bowman is back, as well as junior forwards Connor Organ and Jake Wade. Sophomores include forwards Eric Cooke and Julien Lacasse.

Freshmen Richard Griffin and Teo Jurapovac are battling to back up Lenhart in goal.

The Cardinals open Friday in the three-day Midwest Thanksgiving Classic at Chiller North against St. Louis St. Vianney before playing Upper Arlington and Centerville on Saturday at Chiller North. Their Sunday schedule will be determined by their performance in the first two days of the event.

"One thing we need to work on is special teams, because they really hurt us last year," Roehrenbeck said. "We're looking not only to get more opportunities by staying more disciplined, but by capitalizing on those opportunities as well."

Last season, St. Charles went 7-9 in the Capital Hockey Conference to place seventh (15 points), behind Dublin Coffman (31), Olentangy Liberty (30), Dublin Jerome (27), Olentangy (20), Worthington Kilbourne (17) and Gahanna (16), and ahead of Upper Arlington (14), DeSales (12), Thomas Worthington (10), Olentangy Orange (5) and Dublin Scioto (1).

This season, Watterson and Cincinnati Moeller were added to the league, making 14 teams. The CHC schedule will have 13 league games, with teams meeting once.
