Coach Jeff Pharion has led his St. Charles Preparatory School football team through the rigors of the preseason, and now he's ready to see if the Cardinals can bounce back from last year's 3-7 finish.

The Cardinals open Friday, Aug. 28, at home against Columbus South, which finished 1-9 last season.

"We don't know a lot about them," Pharion said.

"They were changing coaching staffs, so we will have to wait and see how they look."

South is led by first-year coach Grady Parks Jr., who was defensive coordinator at Eastmoor Academy from 2007-14.

St. Charles has switched to a 4-3 base defense after going with a 3-4 look the past few seasons, and Pharion has been impressed with the results.

"Our defensive coordinator, Mike Reggie, has done a good job getting us ready, and we have steadily progressed over the past few weeks," Pharion said. "They have worked together on learning the package and playing well."

Leading the way defensively is a front that includes seniors Taylor Hill and Patrick McPherson, juniors Luke Brake, Eric Cothern and Grant Griffith and sophomores Brandon Derrow and Jake Sattler.

Offensively, the Cardinals have a new starting quarterback in senior Joe Maciejewski and a new backfield. Maciejewski started three games last season when 2015 graduate Jacob Moehrman was out with an injury.

Pharion said senior Pearson McDaniel, junior Davionn Johnson and sophomore Brooks McCann will contribute at running back.

Senior Otis Smith takes over in the hybrid-back role, lining up either as a wide receiver or running back. Last season, he caught 16 passes for 251 yards and one touchdown.

"I'm impressed with Joe Maciejewski, who has done everything we have asked him to do," Pharion said.

"We also have a good line and good skill players. I'm looking forward to see how we perform."
