Third-year coach Joshua Price has high expectations for his Bexley High School girls basketball team -- once it becomes healthy.

The Lions had three key contributors sidelined when the season opened Nov. 30 at Hartley.

One of the injured players is 6-foot senior guard/forward Brie Toney, who has been wearing a rehabilitation boot on her right foot. The Marshall University signee was special mention all-state in Division II and first-team all-district and all-MSL-Ohio Division last season, finishing as the Lions' top scorer (17.9 points) and rebounder (10.1).

Sophomore Maddy Vincent, a 5-5 guard who has been wearing a boot on her left foot, averaged 11.7 points last season and was honorable mention all-district and second-team all-league.

Junior Amanda Frey, a 5-8 guard/forward, has a leg injury, according to Price.

"We have a lot of experience back, but the problem is it's not there at the beginning," said Price, whose team went 12-11 overall last season and finished fourth (8-6) in the MSL-Ohio behind champion West Jefferson (12-2). "We have some girls playing out of position and playing varsity with little or no experience.

"When (Frey, Toney and Vincent) return depends on each girl because there's not a clear-cut timetable for any of the three (to come back). The best-case scenario is short term and the worst case is weeks to months."

Lauren Woodford, a 5-6 guard, is the team's only other senior after leading the Lions in assists (3.5) and steals (3.0) last season. Sophomore Emma Dressel, a 5-9 guard/forward, averaged 7.0 points.

"I really like our energy that we have each and every day," Price said. "The girls are picking things up quickly and getting better each day. We're behind where we would like to be at this point, but the growth is tangible. I see them improving both as individuals and as a group."

Rounding out the roster are junior Katie Grunewald (5-7, guard), sophomores Makayla Bruzynski (5-10, post player) and Serena Sereki (5-10, post player) and freshmen Caroline Bunker (5-6, guard/forward), Anne Clubb (5-9, forward) and Ella Hayden (5-7, guard).

"We are a pretty young team with a bunch of freshmen and sophomores who have never been on varsity before," Vincent said. "I know from last year that I had to learn the difference between middle school and high school basketball. I have to help them in learning what they need to be successful."

The Lions open MSL-Ohio play Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Whitehall.

"As a lot of the girls start to get their feet wet, defense should be one of our strong points," Price said. "If we play good defense then that can keep us in every game. That will allow the offense to build up to where it should be.

"We talked about it in practice, about the philosophy of the next girl up. With girls playing in spots they weren't expecting, all we can ask for is for them to work hard and give us as much effort as possible."
