The Canal Winchester-Groveport Area Rotary Club hopes to make a slam-dunk for area students with the return of the Harlem Wizards basketball team March 25.

Last year, the Rotary Club held its first exhibition game fundraiser with the Harlem Wizards facing off against the Canal Winchester Community Super Stars. The event netted about $7,500 that was used to buy needed materials and to support scholarships.

This year, organizers are looking for a repeat of the sold-out crowd that attended the game at the Canal Winchester High School gymnasium, 300 Washington St.

The March 25 event will start at 7 p.m.

Tickets will be available at the door for $10 each for students and senior citizens or $12 each for adults. Discounted advance tickets for $8 and $10 each, respectively, are available at HarlemWizards.com; at the Insurance Circle, 44 S. High St.; or by calling event organizer Catherine Roebuck at 614-920-6351.

"The Harlem Wizards will bring the same magic back this year when they take on the Canal Winchester Community Super Stars team, consisting of Canal Winchester school administrators and teachers," Roebuck said. "The event is a major fundraiser for the club, which helps to support local community initiatives, including providing dictionaries to area school children, scholarships for graduating seniors, and more."

According to Roebuck, the Canal Winchester-Groveport Area Rotary Club has given dictionaries to third-graders in Canal Winchester and Groveport Madison schools for the past three years. This year, the club gave away 800 dictionaries.

"In addition to the dictionaries, the Rotary Club was able to provide 40 USB microphones for Canal Winchester students to help students struggling in reading," Roebuck said.

Rotary Club member Brent Foley said the club also is providing two $1,000 scholarships this year for Canal Winchester High School seniors and will again sponsor a junior from both Canal Winchester and Groveport Madison high schools for the Rotary's "Your Leadership Awards" program.

"We are excited to bring the Wizards back to Canal Winchester," Foley said. "This program helps us raise money to help the students in our community and it's an amazing, silly, and fun event for the whole community to enjoy."
