School may be out for summer, but Canal Winchester Human Services is now collecting supplies for its Tools for Schools program.

Human Services Administrator Penny Miller said 110 book bags filled with school supplies were distributed at the beginning of last school year to Canal Winchester and Bloom Carroll students and even more requests were met during the year.

She is hoping donations to the program this summer will again provide students in every grade level who cannot purchase their own book bags and school supplies with the "tools" they need to be successful in school.

"A book bag filled with school supplies can cost as much as $30 to $50 and for families who already struggle to provide basic needs, it is sometimes very difficult, if not impossible, to provide this as children prepare for school," Miller said. "Without the required supplies, students are disadvantaged because they don't have the tools to succeed and teachers are challenged to make sure that learning is not comprised because students might not be able to participate fully."

Human Services is hoping to collect 125 book bags and enough supplies to fill them so students in the Canal Winchester and Bloom Carroll districts can return to class this fall "fully prepared."

While the department tries to collect each of the items that school websites indicate are needed, Miller said book bags for all grade levels, highlighters, colored markers, colored pencils and index cards are often some of the most-needed items.

Families in need of school supplies for their students are encouraged to email alethat.cwhs@gmail.com or call 614-834-3888 for assistance.

Contributions to Tools for Schools will be accepted through Labor Day and can be dropped off at the Canal Winchester Community Center, Canal Winchester Community Food Pantry, Faith United Methodist Church, Hope United Methodist Church, Lithopolis United Methodist Church, David Evangelical Lutheran Church, or David's United Church of Christ.

Financial donations, which are used to purchase book bags and school supplies, can be made online at www.cwhumanservices.org or can be mailed to Canal Winchester Human Services, 22 S. Trine St., Canal Winchester. 43110.

"Just as it is hard to be successful in the workforce without proper tools, it can be difficult for students to reach their full potential if they are not equipped with the tools needed," Miller said.

"Donations of book bags and school supplies help to insure that every student can begin the school year fully prepared," she added.
