The village of Galena on Oct. 24 extended its refuse collection contract with Big O Refuse Corp.

In 2012, the cost of recycling and trash collection will be about $52 per quarter or $49 per quarter for seniors.

Village fiscal officer Marty Mazzie said she has had 15 responses from 21 letters mailed regarding delinquent sewer bills. To date, the village is owed $9,920 for past services.

Public service director Scott Jamison reported the village plans to increase zoning certificate application fees to keep pace with the cost of compliance inspections.

“Currently, a new house building application is $150,” Jamison said, “but the sidewalk inspection fee alone is $250.”

Jamison said an Ohio Public Works Commission funding application was submitted for phase three of the Walnut Street reconstruction.

A stormsewer catch-basin beside the municipal building was repaired, as was the front step and the Columbus Street wastewater lift station.

Jamison also said residents will be notified via the village newsletter that property maintenance codes will be enforced beginning in February and March. Jamison estimated 15 to 20 properties throughout the village currently are in violation.

Council members approved three resolutions authorizing the transfer of funds to cover salaries, repairs and maintenance, which include repairs to the siding on the newly named Galena Village Hall, formerly the 1829 Building.

Council approved the name change at the meeting.
