The district office at Hogback Ridge Preserve and Gallant Farm will be closed Friday, Jan. 1. Parks will be open regular hours, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the Lodge at Deer Haven Preserve will be open regular hours, noon to 5 p.m.

Drop in at the following free programs:

* New Year's Day Hike, 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 1. Take an invigorating two-mile walk in the woods and meadows of Deer Haven Preserve, 4183 Liberty Road. Hot drinks and cookies will be served in the lodge afterward. All ages; meet at the Lodge.

* Gallant Farm Book Club, 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, for a discussion of And Then There Were None, by Agatha Christie. Read ahead, and come for the conversation. Gallant Farm is at 2150 Buttermilk Hill Road, Delaware. The book club is open to ages 14 and older.

Register now for these January programs:

* Preschool Park Pals program on owls, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 12, for children ages 4-5, with an adult. Register by Tuesday, Jan. 5.

* Homeschool Adventures program, Stories in the Snow, 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, for ages 6-12, with an adult. Register by Thursday, Jan. 14.

Both programs will be at Deer Haven Preserve, 4183 Liberty Road.
