Ohio's first Menchie's frozen yogurt store opened in Dublin this week at 7545 Sawmill Road.

Owner Sandra Leess, who lives in Dublin, said she's been looking to open a frozen yogurt business in the area for some time. She often ate frozen yogurt while visiting family in Florida.

"The idea started percolating in my mind since there's none here," she said. "Last May my daughter went to visit my other daughter out in L.A. They went to a Menchie's. My daughter called and said, 'I found your franchise.' "

Once that franchise was found, expanding Menchie's to a 14th state, Leess looked around for locations and scouted something close to home -- the Kroger plaza on Sawmill Road.

"I shop here," she said. "There are so many residences within walking distance and this Kroger is one of the busiest. Closeness to home is also a plus."

The new business will employ about 25 at the start; Leess recruited some Dublin high school students during the school district's job fair last month.

Menchie's will offer 12 flavors of live-active culture yogurt at a time, although the flavors will be rotated, Leess said. The store also will offer low carb, no sugar and non-dairy items.

Customers will be able to mix flavors and choose toppings such as cereal, nuts, granola, candy, fruit and hot fudge.

After serving themselves, customers will pay by the pound for their creations.

The 2,100-square-foot location also offers seating and a separate room for parties and gatherings.

Leess said the new business also will participate in community fundraisers and already has one scheduled for the Coffman High School girls lacrosse team.

"One thing I really liked about Menchie's is that it wants to be a partner with the community," she said. "I wanted to have a place for families to come for dessert after soccer games."

Menchie's will be open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
