SWACO will sponsor the first mobile household hazardous waste collection from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Ashland Inc., 5200 Blazer Parkway in Dublin. It is open to residents of Franklin County.

In 2010, residents delivered 461,949 pounds of corrosives, acids, fluorescent light bulbs, and other household hazardous wastes to SWACO.

A complete list of acceptable items is available online at www.swaco.org/SmartPeople/HHW.aspx.

All materials collected from residents are recycled if possible or disposed of in the most environmentally sound manner. The solid waste authority does not accept latex or water-based paints at the collection sites. Those paints are not hazardous and once dried can be thrown in the trash. Instructions on the can will indicate whether the paint is water-based or latex. Any paint that cleans up with soap and water will not be accepted.

In addition to the mobile collections, SWACO's permanent residential household hazardous waste collection center is at 1249 Essex Ave. in Columbus. It is open from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays.
