A dean has been named for Ohio University's Dublin campus.

Dr. William J. Burke will lead Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in Dublin and is set to start July 22.

Burke graduated from Heritage College in 1988 and is vice president for medical education at OhioHealth Doctors Hospital in Columbus.

"Ohio University has held a special place in my heart for nearly 30 years," Burke said in a news release from the school.

"The opportunity to work collaboratively with our faculty and staff, OhioHealth and other important central Ohio health systems, our alumni and the Dublin community and physicians throughout the region is truly a unique opportunity to build something of enduring value for Ohio," Burke said.

"It's an honor to be a part of this."

Construction of the Post Road campus in Dublin begins next month and the inaugural class of 50 medical students is expected to begin education in July 2014.

The campus is on 14.8 acres of land that formerly housed the Dublin Entrepreneurial Center and will have about 65,000 square feet between three buildings for students and staff.

Students at the Dublin campus will complete four years of medical training in central Ohio.

The new campus is being funded in part through a $105 million gift from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation to address the shortage of primary care physicians.
