With four starters back, the Dublin Scioto High School girls basketball team's season outlook appears bright.

With four starters back, the Dublin Scioto High School girls basketball team's season outlook appears bright.

The Irish opened with a 57-49 loss to Thornville Sheridan in the Gary West Tipoff Classic on Nov. 25 at Reynoldsburg and played Watterson on Nov. 29. They begin OCC-Cardinal Division play Tuesday, Dec. 6, at home against Jerome.

Last season, Scioto finished 6-17 overall and 2-12 in the OCC-Cardinal, finishing seventh behind champion Hilliard Bradley (13-1).

The Irish went 2-21 overall in the 2014-15 season.

"We'd like to finish over .500, have a winning record," fourth-year coach Jen Music said. "(We want to) execute offensively, run our offense, and we talk about having good team chemistry."

Among the returnees is 5-foot-10 senior post player McKenzie Lomax, who averaged 9.3 points and 10 rebounds and was named first-team all-league and honorable mention all-district in Division I last season.

Lomax ranks second in program history with 652 career rebounds, behind 2007 graduate Crystal Murdaugh (701).

"I think it's going to be a pretty good year. We should expect a lot of wins," Lomax said. "From year to year, we've gotten more and more experience, so this year is looking good."

The other returning starters are 5-9 senior guard Alexis Kennedy, 5-10 junior post player Kennedie Lomax and 5-9 sophomore forward Natalie Hutras. Kennedy averaged 6.3 points and 5.1 rebounds last season.

Also back are junior Sasha Lee (5-10, post player) and sophomore Eliyana Floyd (5-3, guard).

Other players looking to contribute include juniors Brooke Anderson (5-11, post player) and Domini Lombardo (5-5, guard), sophomores Emily Dinan (5-3, guard), Brianna Jordan (5-1, guard) and Sabrina Veliev (5-5, guard/forward) and freshman Lauren Erickson (5-9, guard).

"We've given some other kids some chances to play," Music said. "We have a lot of kids that are going to play both varsity and (junior varsity) to try to get a feel of who's going to fit in.

"When we play full-court defense, a lot of good things happen. We push the ball very well. When Alexis has the ball in her hands, she sees the floor well and we get a lot easier buckets versus when we have to set up our offense. We get a lot out of our defense."

Hockey team again playing j.v. schedule

Due to a lack of depth in the program, the hockey team is playing a predominantly junior varsity schedule for the second consecutive season.

"Half of the team is underclassmen, so that gives us the opportunity to give those kids some game time in high school games and learn from mistakes," second-year coach Morgan Langworthy said.

"The seniors made the decision that they felt was best for the team. They made the decision that the best thing to do for the growth of the team was to play the same type of schedule again."

The Irish have three varsity tournaments on the schedule and will compete in the district tournament.

Scioto competed in the Midwest Thanksgiving Classic Nov. 25-27 at Chiller Dublin, going 1-3. Its win came against Strongsville B, 3-0.

The Irish will compete in the Adam Allgeyer Memorial Showcase Dec. 8-11 at Chiller Dublin and in the Olentangy Orange Pioneer Classic Jan. 13-16 at Chiller North.

Scioto is playing in the Capital Hockey Conference junior varsity division.

"All the seniors are making a sacrifice, but (playing a predominantly j.v. schedule is) definitely what the program needs because after this (senior) class our numbers are looking a little sparse, so it really helps out that we're jumping down now because they're going to need it next year," senior defenseman Jacob LeRoy said.

"In the end, it's really going to grow the program."

Senior Derek DeCola and junior Zach Beatty are splitting time at goaltender.

Other seniors are Michael Gast (forward), Sean Hrelec (defenseman), Evan Hutras (defenseman), Alex Kovac (forward), Matt Ward (forward) and Jacob Wogan (defenseman).

Also on the team are juniors Spencer Cogan (forward) and Jonny Schorr (forward), sophomores Avery Langworthy (forward), Thomas Lucas (forward), Sean McGowan (defenseman) and A.J. Waizmann (forward) and freshmen Jared Bowman (forward), Pete Hrelec (defenseman), David Ibarra (forward) and David Loew (forward).
