Columbus Academy will present "The Music Man" in three performances April 29 through May 1

Director Susan Neal said the show, a musical set in the time the academy was founded a century ago, would feature fantastic actors and an amazing set.

"It's the school's 100th anniversary, so it's part of the celebration," she said. "'The Music Man' is a classic show. That's why it has been around so long. It's a great musical with a big cast."

William Westwater, a junior from Gahanna, and Suesan Chen, a freshman from Worthington, will play the lead roles.

Westwater, 17, said he has enjoyed being in the lead role.

"It's fun," he said. "There are a lot of responsibilities. When everyone focuses, there's a lot of energy. I think it will be pretty cool. When everyone hits their stride, it's amazing."

Westwater said audiences would enjoy the show's choreography and the singing.

"There are a lot of levels of singing and dancing," he said. "There may be barbershop (singing) one time, then a little Sinatra to fast-talking salesman type. It's pretty cool."

Neal said she's impressed by what she has seen thus far from the students.

"The kids are pumped about it," she said. "The costumes are impressive, and their hair will be done in styles from back then. "

In addition to being directed by Neal of Columbus, the show will receive technical direction from Scott Dillon of Grove City, music direction from Amy Brooks of New Albany, choreography by Katie Skamfer of Worthington and costumes by Donna Williamson of Delaware.

Evening performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. April 29 and 30, and a Sunday matinee will begin at 2 p.m. May 1 in the school's Schoedinger Theatre, 4300 Cherry Bottom Road.

Tickets will cost $7 at the door or can be ordered in advance by emailing

All three performances are open to the public, but a special reception for Columbus Academy alumni will be held prior to the Sunday matinee. Alumni should call Jill Grube at (614) 509-2290 if they are interested in attending.
