The Gahanna pools are making waves this season, breaking records for gate entries, concessions and memberships.

Beth McCollam, public-information coordinator for the Gahanna Parks & Recreation Department, said concessions at the Gahanna Swimming Pool as of July 15 were $27,000, compared to $9,500 at the same time last year.

Year-to-date gate entries at the GSP total $22,800, compared to $8,500 in 2011.

At the Hunters Ridge Pool (HRP), concession sales have doubled, from $4,500 to $9,000. Gate entries total $22,000 thus far this year, compared to $13,000 in 2011.

Gahanna City Council approved a supplemental appropriation of $11,000 on July 16 to purchase additional concession items for the pools.

Parks and recreation director Tony Collins said 2012 has been a record season, with concession items being purchased at higher levels.

"It's been a great summer," said Kate Mattison, parks and rec recreation supervisor. "Of course, with more people, we have more expenses. We predict things will start slowing down as we move into August and people start thinking about (going) back to school."

She said pool memberships are up nearly 10 percent from last year.

Scheduled events at the pools include $1 ice-cream-bowl nights at the HRP from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Aug. 14 and $1 hotdog nights at the GSP from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays through Aug. 16.

Free Willy will be the last Dive-In Movie feature at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 10 at the HRP. Cost is $5.

The last adult swim night at the HRP will be held from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Friday, July 27, at the HRP.

The pools will close for the season Sept. 2. Dog Days, allowing dogs to swim in the pool for a small fee, will be Sept. 8-9 at HRP.

From 5 to 8:30 p.m. today (July 26): Zacs DJ Co. is hosting a competition called the Every Day I'm Shufflin' dance competition. No more than 30 teams of one to four people may enter at a $10 entry fee per team. The top three prizes will be first place, $350; second place, an iPod Touch; and third place, an iPod Shuffle.

Children will dance and be judged for who gets the winning spots. One of the judges will be Gahanna's Jeffrey Clark, regional dancer of the year 2012. Clark also will perform a dance of his own.

Rita's Italian Ice will be a vendor. New Life Church of Gahanna will have their student ministries hosting games and giving away prizes, and 88.7 radioU will be there playing music and giving away prizes.
