The Gahanna Christian Academy boys soccer and girls volleyball teams are under new leadership.

The Gahanna Christian Academy boys soccer and girls volleyball teams are under new leadership.

Tim Haugen, who previously coached the golf team, has replaced Scott Ramsey as soccer coach. Haugen was an assistant last year under Ramsey, who stepped down after three seasons.

Donna Walker-Griffin took over as volleyball coach after Nate Kirk resigned following eight seasons. She was an assistant last season and also coaches at the recreational level.

Golf is not being offered this fall.

Soccer team splits first two games

The boys soccer team split its first two games, defeating Patriot Prep 3-1 on Aug. 24 and losing to Shekinah Christian 10-3 on Aug. 28.

The Eagles, who are looking to improve on last season's 5-11-1 overall record, begin MOCAL play Sept. 15 at Madison Christian.

Last season, the Eagles went 0-4 in the league to finish fifth behind champion Madison Christian (3-0-1).

"We lost a lot of seniors the last two years," said Haugen, who also has coached track and field at the school. "We don't have a lot returning, but we have a good crop of freshmen and they look really good. I'm hopeful that it won't be as disappointing a year as it's been. We're definitely in a rebuilding mode."

Gahanna Christian returns six players, led by seniors Ian McPherson (forward/goalkeeper) and Rachel Ohm (midfielder).

Also back are juniors Andrew Brewer (forward), Madison Schlesselman (midfielder) and Ariana Wyant (midfielder) and sophomore Kalikeyas Hailemariam (forward).

Junior defender Josiah Haugen, the coach's son, missed the last two seasons with a left knee injury and is expected to contribute.

Other players are freshmen Matthew Downs (defender), Rob Maston (defender), Caleb Robinson (midfielder), Dylan Smith (goalie) and Jacob Smith (defender).

Dylan Smith is expected to be the starting goalie, with McPherson as the backup.

Haugen said players still could be added to the team in the early part of the season.

Volleyball team records early wins

The girls volleyball team was 3-2 overall after losing to Liberty Union 25-17, 25-15, 25-14 on Aug. 31.

The Eagles began MOCAL play Sept. 1 against Madison Christian.

Last season, Gahanna Christian went 15-9 overall and 6-2 in the MOCAL to finish second behind Delaware Christian (8-0).

"My goal for this team is to mentor those young ladies and help them become successful at whatever they do, whether it's sports, whether it's education," Walker-Griffin said.

The Eagles were hit hard by graduation and have no seniors.

Back are juniors Katie Downing (middle hitter/outside hitter) and Kalie Manko (setter/outside hitter).

Other players are junior Autumn Paugh (setter/outside hitter), sophomores Gabby Boakye (outside hitter), Talliah Mitchell (back row), Rachel Robinson (back row), Maddy Wright (back row) and Alexa Young (outside hitter/middle blocker) and freshmen Maranatha Novihoho (outside hitter) and Kenzie Welch (back row).

"I'm pretty excited about what the year is going to hold for (the team)," Walker-Griffin said.
