Opening day for the Gahanna Lincoln High School baseball team proved to be a day of milestones.

For Mike Shade, who is in his 25th season as the Lions' coach, Gahanna's 13-1 win over Perrysburg on March 28 in Cocoa Beach, Fla., marked his 400th career victory.

In the fourth inning, junior catcher Cael Baker set a program record by hitting his ninth career home run.

"(The victory milestone) was nice, but (it) was even better that Cael just broke the career home run record," Shade said. "It was crushed. (Assistant coach Brian) Hull said it means I get to buy them dinner for getting to 400."

Shade, who was elected to the Central District Hall of Fame in 2013, has coached the Lions to six Division I district championships. Gahanna reached state semifinals in both 2013 and '14.

Baker helped Gahanna to a district runner-up finish a year ago and is the team's lone returning starter. He started at designated hitter much of his freshman season and has been the starting catcher since the beginning of his sophomore season.
