The German Village Garten Club's inaugural holiday fundraising event promises lots of food, drink and warm tidings, organizers say.

The Golden Holiday Gala will be held from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Meeting Haus, 588 S. Third St.

The event is a fundraiser for the German Village Garten Club, which includes Friends of Frank Fetch Park. The groups are responsible for all 17 flower boxes on South Third Street, as well as the maintenance of the park on Beck Street.

Carol Porter, a member of the Garten Club, said the group is hoping to make it an annual signature event.

"With our 125 members, we probably do more than most clubs," Porter said. "We work very hard to spend our money wisely throughout our historic district because that helps raise awareness of German Village."

Cost is $50 per person. Reservation forms are available at the Meeting Haus. Admission includes a smorgasbord from Kroger Marketplace in the Brewery District, gourmet coffee, wines and punch.

Also, the event will feature 17 handcrafted wreaths, which will be available for purchase via silent auction. "Jazz Mary" Daniels will light up the stage with holiday music and other classic tunes.

Porter said the fundraiser will complement the Garten Market, which is held every spring. Its success, however, depends on the weather.

Jerry Glick, another member of the club, said the gala is shaping up to be a good time.

"It's one of the most fun evenings because it combines everything the villagers love - good food, good wine, good music and an auction," he said. "You can't beat it."

The Golden Holiday Gala is part of a full slate of holiday happenings in the village.

The annual tree lighting, known as the official holiday kickoff event, will be held 7 p.m. Dec. 3 in Frank Fetch Park.

Village Lights, slated 6 to 10 p.m. Dec. 5, caps off the weekend. About 9,000 luminaries will line the sidewalks throughout the village. Merchants will offer special prices, giveaways, live entertainment and refreshments.
