Service Department crews will begin collecting yard waste April 2 in Grandview and Marble Cliff.

Yard waste collection will continue each Monday through Nov. 26.

When a holiday falls on a Monday, the yard waste will be collected on Tuesday for that week only.

Yard waste must be appropriately bundled or placed in biodegradable paper bags and should not be set out earlier than one hour prior to sunset on Sunday.

"We don't want the bags to be sitting out for long periods of time because they can get rained on and the bags will begin to break," street supervisor Steve McKnight said.

Bundles or bags should be placed next to the alley or behind the curb at the street if no alley exists.

Bundles should be no larger than two feet in diameter, four feet long and weigh no more than 50 pounds.

Grass and plant materials must be placed in paper bags that do not exceed a 32-gallon capacity and or weigh more than 50 pounds.

"Excess weight is probably the most common problem we have," McKnight said. "People just don't realize how quickly the weight of their grass and yard waste accumulates."

The weight restriction is placed for the safety of the workers who must lift the bags and cans by hand, he said.

Plastic and biodegradable plastic bags are not permitted and sod, soil, dirt-covered roots and rocks are also not accepted, McKnight said.

Crews will not pick up yard waste material that does not follow the regulations, he said. A notice explaining why the material was not collected is placed.

"Once the weight is reduced, we'll pick them up," McKnight said.

Residents can use a refuse container for yard waste, but the container must display a "yard waste" sticker and weigh no more than 50 pounds.

Limbs should not stick out more than 12 inches above the top of the container.

Yard waste stickers are free and available at the Grandview Heights Service Department, 1525 Goodale Blvd.

The annual Spring Clean Up will be held from May 8 to 11 in Grandview and Marble Cliff. During that week, residents will be able to dispose of large, unwanted items at no cost.

No construction debris or soil will be accepted during the Spring Clean Up Week, he said.
