The Grandview Heights High School boys cross country team competed in the McGowan Invitational on Sept. 12 at Watkins Memorial without two of its top runners, and the girls squad also was shorthanded.

The boys were missing Jackson Furbee and Liam Kerr, who was a Division III state qualifier last season. The girls were without Emma Amurgis.

"Liam had an illness earlier in the week, so we held him out, and Jackson and Emma were both taking the ACT and could not be there," coach Chris Szabo said. "We still had some good performances without those three in our lineup."

Zach Martin led the boys by finishing 51st (19 minutes, 26.33 seconds) as the Bobcats were 10th (295 points) of 18 teams behind champion Leesburg Fairfield (52).

Andrew Bergmann (57th, 19:33.35) was next for Grandview, followed by Ben Rehbeck (61st, 19:37.92), Sasha Efanov (98th, 20:42.83), Cameron Hunter (102nd, 20:50.96), Sam Carter (131st, 21:49.7) and Gavin Van Horn (139th, 22:17.19).

The girls were sixth (156) of 13 teams behind champion Galion Northmor (61). Emma Wheeler (21st, 22:43.66) led the Bobcats, followed by Sarah Marrone (28th, 23:15.74), Avani Kumar (42nd, 23:59.52), Gabby Smith (46th, 24:17.45), Emma Berlin (53rd, 24:44.53), Evelyn Brown (63rd, 25:16.75) and Ginevera Pintor (83rd, 26:19.82).

"Everyone has been working really hard and we have been staying healthy," Szabo said. "We're putting ourselves in position to have a great season."
