Despite entering the postseason eight games under .500, the Ready High School softball team was hoping a tough schedule prepared it for the Division III district tournament.

The 13th-seeded Silver Knights opened the postseason May 14 by winning at sixth-seeded Fredericktown 11-8 in a second-round game. Ready improved to 9-16 and advanced to a district semifinal May 19 against fifth-seeded West Jefferson at Pickerington Central.

"(The game against Fredericktown) was our best offensive game we've had in terms of having no strikeouts, and defensively we only had one error," coach Jen Goff said. "I was very pleased."

The Ready-West Jefferson winner plays second-seeded Bloom-Carroll or 12th-seeded Marion Pleasant in a district final Friday, May 22, or Saturday, May 23, at Pickerington Central.

The winner plays in a regional semifinal May 28 at Bellefontaine.

Against Fredericktown, the Knights scored five times in the top of the seventh after trailing 8-6.

Erica Ogden had four RBI and scored the go-ahead run on a hit by Naomi Etgen. Shannan Waldo went 4-for-4 and Courtney Hackney was 2-for-4. Hailey Bryan had two hits and pitched a complete game.

Baseball team falls in tourney

The baseball team snapped a four-year run of failing to win in the postseason when it beat North Union 1-0 on May 12 to open the Division III district tournament.

The 11th-seeded Knights then lost at fourth-seeded Pleasant 5-4 on May 14 in a second-round game to finish 9-14. Bryce McDonald hit a two-run home run off Brendan Kirby in the sixth inning for the winning runs.

It took a 13-strikeout performance from freshman pitcher Tristin Siemer and what coach Nate Hillery called a "weird play" to help the host Knights defeat the 14th-seeded Wildcats in the first round.

With Kirby on second base in the first inning, Caleb Reverman hit a deep fly ball that was caught by the center fielder. However, the center fielder collided with the right fielder, and with both players on the ground after the catch, Kirby tagged up and scored from second for the game's only run.

Ready lost to North Union 3-1 in the first round of the tournament a year ago.

Track teams begin postseason

The boys and girls track and field teams began their respective postseasons May 19.

The girls are competing in the Division II district meet that concludes Saturday, May 23, at Westerville South. The top four finishers in each event advance to the regional May 28 and 30 at Lexington.

A year ago at district, the girls 3,200-meter relay took third. Seniors Courtney Bair and Emily Genders and junior Kathleen Colvin are returnees from that relay.

Senior Codi Platter was fourth at district in the boys 1,600 a year ago.

On May 14 and 16 in the CCL meet at Columbus School for Girls, the girls finished last (7) behind Watterson (183), Hartley (122.5), CSG (108) and DeSales (65.5) and the boys were last (5) behind St. Charles (171), DeSales (105.5), Watterson (98.5) and Hartley (94).
