The Hilliard Davidson High School wrestling team will put its full lineup to the test for the first time when it competes in the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Holiday Invitational.

The two-day tournament on Wednesday and Dec. 30 is one of the premier holiday tournaments in the state. It's a difficult place to make a season debut, as Alex Mickley found out last year.

"My first match last year, I lost," said Mickley, who ended up qualifying for the Division I state tournament at 152 pounds. "Yeah, it's a tough tournament."

Mickley and Nolan Gill both will make their season debuts at Brecksville-Broadview Heights. Both were members of the football team and started the wrestling season late after the Wildcats advanced to a Division I state semifinal, where they lost to Huber Heights Wayne 28-14 on Nov. 27.

All football players had reported to practice by Dec. 13. With some holes in the lineup, the Wildcats still were able to win the DeSales Classic on Dec. 4. They scored 184 points to finish ahead of runner-up DeSales (125). Angelo DiSabato (119), Kyle Ehrhart (160), Clay Kuszmaul (171) and Marshall Knoch (heavyweight) won titles.

"I knew we were going to be good, but we had some kids step up in spots," DiSabato said. "We're just doing what we should do."

With some of the lineup returning to form, the Wildcats rescheduled a Dec. 16 dual meet against West Jefferson for Jan. 26. With West Jefferson being ranked fourth in the first Division III coaches poll on Dec. 15, both sides agreed it would be more beneficial for the teams to compete at full strength.

The break has given Davidson extra time to condition before going to Brecksville-Broadview Heights.

"It actually worked out pretty good for us with exams (last week). We didn't have to worry about competition, we could just get good workouts in and be ready to go," coach Dominic DiSabato said. "Next week we'll start focusing with normal practice time. Right now we're working on drilling live. There's not a lot of technique yet."

Davidson was ranked ninth behind Lakewood St. Edward in the Division I state poll and second in the Division I area coaches poll behind Marysville.

•Darby is spending part of the holiday break at the Medina Invitational Tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Coach Brendan Moody expects it to be the first tournament where some of his key wrestlers compete at their postseason weights.

Some athletes have had success wrestling up a weight class. At last Saturday's Pickerington North Panther Invitational, Cameron Longwell (125), Tyler Bowens (171) and Sufyan El-Geroushi (heavyweight) each made it to a final.

At Medina, Bowens is expected to compete at 160 and Longwell at 119. Both were district qualifiers at that weight last season.

"Those guys look pretty good," Moody said. "We have got to get a little bit better wrestling in the third period. It's all fine-tune stuff with those guys. All three of those guys have been banged up and are missing practice."

Last year at Medina, Darby was 26th (42.5 points) behind champion Lakewood St. Edward (285.5). Bowens was sixth at 160 and Longwell was eighth at 112.

•Bradley competes at the Greater Miami Valley Wrestling Association Invitational on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Bradley scored 65.5 points to finish 21st at the GMVWA last year. Andrew Higgins was fourth at 140. He has been wrestling at both 171 and 160 this season. A state qualifier last year, Higgins was third at 171 at the Olentangy Invitational on Dec. 4.
