Mitchell Thai lost for just the second time as a varsity player, but the sophomore for the Hilliard Bradley High School boys tennis team advanced to the Division I district tournament.

Thai finished second in singles in the sectional held May 14 and 16 at Upper Arlington, going 4-1 and losing to top-seeded Jack Zelezny of UA 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the final. Thai, who is 19-1 on the season, was the second seed.

The top four finishers in singles and doubles at each sectional site qualified for district Friday, May 22, at Davidson and Saturday, May 23, at UA. The top four placers at district advance to state May 29 and 30 at Ohio State.

At sectional, Thai defeated Whetstone's Winfield Slocum 6-0, 6-0 in a district-qualifying match and beat third-seeded Sam Sullivan of St. Charles 7-5, 6-0 in a semifinal to reach the final.

Thai finished 20-1 last season, losing to UA's Jeffrey Melvin 7-5, 6-3 at district in a state-qualifying match.

The Jaguars did not have any other district qualifiers.

In singles, Louis Sartain and Doug Knecht both won their first-round matches before losing in the second round. Sartain fell to fourth-seeded Anthony Yang of UA 6-0, 6-1 and Knecht lost to New Albany's Harrison Lippy 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles, Kovid Misicka and Kenta Namiki had a first-round bye and won their second-round match before losing to third-seeded Tyler Holsopple and Jack Hughes of UA 6-0, 6-0 in a district-qualifying match.

Blake Mooney and Zach Rice lost to top-seeded C.J. Cash and Alex Kobelt of New Albany 6-0, 6-0 in a second-round match after having a first-round bye.

Wildcats advance pair to district

Davidson has two Division I district qualifiers in singles in Chris Codogni and Thomas Porter, who finished third and fourth, respectively, in their home sectional.

Codogni is making his second consecutive district appearance, having lost to St. Charles' Evan Yakubov 6-0, 6-2 in the opening round last year.

In district-qualifying matches, Codogni defeated Olentangy Orange's Malcom Low 6-1, 6-0 and Porter beat Groveport's Caleb West 6-0, 6-1. In the semifinals, Codogni lost to second-seeded Rohith Koneru of Dublin Scioto 6-0, 6-1 and Porter lost to top-seeded Bryan Yoshino of Dublin Coffman 6-1, 6-1.

Codogni then defeated Porter 7-5, 6-3 in the third-place match.

Both doubles teams were ousted in district-qualifying matches. Owen Hafler and Collin McCabe lost to Orange's Kaleb Kok and Stephen Spezzano 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, and Michael Heinz and Jack Shepard lost to Coffman's Robbie Markus and Nicholas Kashani-Motlagh 6-0, 6-0.

Also in singles, Noah Elliott won a play-in match before losing to Koneru 6-1, 6-0 in the first round.

Panthers' doubles team advances

Darby's David Kim and Tom Ohler finished fourth in doubles in the Division I sectional at Reynoldsburg to qualify for district.

Last year at district, Kim and 2014 graduate Siddartha Revur lost in the opening round.

Kim and Ohler defeated Chillicothe's Frankie Whalen and Nick Whalen 6-4, 6-2 in a district-qualifying match before losing to Pickerington North's Matt Barry and Blaine Carr 6-0, 6-1 in a semifinal. They then lost to Gahanna's Eric Chen and Chris Kusovski 6-2, 7-5 in the third-place match.

Also at sectional, Krishna Revur and Yash Somani won their first-round match in doubles before losing to Olentangy Liberty's Arjun Bakshi and Daniel Moran 6-2, 6-3.

In singles, Andy Landers won his first-round match before losing to fourth-seeded Daniel Mayotte of Westerville North 6-2, 6-1 in the second round. Justin Knueppel lost to North's Sam Payne 6-0, 6-1 in the first round, and Chris Long lost to Marysville's Tony Martin 6-1, 6-1 in a play-in match.
