John Walsh was shot and killed Dec. 18 by his neighbor, Jerome Boyd Marcum, 69, in the 12000 block of Jug Street. Marcum also shot and killed his sister Sonya Sue Marcum, 61.

Marcum has been charged with two counts of murder in the slayings of Walsh and Sonya Sue Marcum.

Deputies responding to reports of a shooting found Walsh dead in the front yard of 12020 Jug St., where Sonya Marcum lived. She was found seriously wounded in the garage of the home and was flown to Licking Memorial Hospital, where she later was pronounced dead.

Marcum was arrested by Licking County Sheriff officials at about 4:30 p.m. Dec. 18, when he tried to shoot a third person - his brother, who lives in Mount Vernon, authorities said. Homer Clarence Marcum, 63, disarmed his brother when the gun did not discharge, officials said.
Authorities said Marcum confessed to the killings.

Deputies said the shootings might have been sparked by a dispute between Jerome Marcum and Sonya Marcum over a water well that their homes shared on Jug Street. They said Sonya Marcum might have turned off the water to Jerome's house.

Walsh was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of Vietnam and worked many years through the Carpenter's Local 200 of Columbus, Henry A. Justus Inc., and was recently employed by William Shaffer Construction Company.

Calling hours were held Tuesday for Walsh at Crouse-Kauber-Sammons Funeral Home, followed by a mass on Wednesday at Johnstown's Church of the Ascension.
