Pataskala Division of Police officers are looking for a 2012 Hyundai reported stolen at 6:16 p.m. Feb. 8 from a residence in the 500 block of Stable Street.

The vehicle was unlocked and had keys in it, according to the police report.

Police Chief Bruce Brooks said residents need to be aware thieves are on the lookout for small items they can steal from vehicles. These items include cellphones, computers and coins.

He said thieves might break into a vehicle looking for something else, then find keys inside and decide to take the vehicle.

Brooks said residents also need to remember the city has an ordinance which prevents motorists from leaving a car running with the keys inside.

He said police officers can turn off the engine, secure the vehicle and take the keys to the police station until the owner comes to retrieve them.

According to section 303.03 of the city's codified ordinances, "A law enforcement officer may remove the ignition key left in the ignition switch of an unlocked and unattended motor vehicle parked on a street or highway, or any public or private property used by the public for purposes of vehicular travel or parking. The officer removing such key shall place notification upon the vehicle detailing his name and badge number, the place where such key may be reclaimed and the procedure for reclaiming such key. The key shall be returned to the owner of the motor vehicle upon presentation of proof of ownership."
