The Marysville High School girls tennis team did not receive any favors when the OCC realigned.

Before, the Monarchs biggest test within the league was Pickerington North. Now, those big tests have increased to more than one a season.

"We have a much tougher league, but so far we're doing pretty well," coach Stephanie Schupp said. "The girls, on the whole, are playing much better against these tougher opponents. We're playing longer matches, we're winning more games. They're on another level and improving and you can see that when we meet these tough teams."

Marysville is 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the OCC-Cardinal. The victories were over Grandview (3-2 on Aug. 13) and Whetstone (4-1 on Aug. 21).

In the OCC-Cardinal Division, Marys-ville lost to Olentangy Liberty (5-0 on Aug. 14), Olentangy (5-0 on Aug. 19) and Westerville Central (5-0 on Aug. 26).

"Olentangy and Liberty are very good teams," Schupp said. "We have our work cut out for us. It's a rigorous schedule."

The remaining league schedule has the Monarchs playing at Westerville South on Tuesday, playing host to Dublin Jerome on Sept. 9 and Westerville North on Sept. 16 and at Dublin Scioto on Sept. 23 before the league tournament Sept. 27 at Liberty.

"We're working on being able to keep our level of play up no matter who we play against," Schupp said. "We have to continue to play better against some tougher opponents."

Last season, the three Westerville schools were a combined 17-32 with no district qualifiers. Central was the best of the three, finishing 11-5 overall. The Warhawks have returned their top two singles players in Taylor Jordan and Jenna Bittner.

"One of our goals is to be a top-10 program in central Ohio," Central coach Donovon Barrett said. "I think we're getting close."

Despite graduating its top two singles players, Jerome is the class of the league after winning the OCC-Cardinal last season and reaching the final of the Division I OTCA state tournament before losing to Rocky River Magnificat 3-1.

"Most of our kids have the ability to advance far in the individual state tournament," Jerome coach Anthony Susi said.

Unfortunately for the Monarchs, a strong early season start has been hampered by injuries. That caused Schupp to tweak the lineup numerous times.

Currently, Schupp's lineup at singles is Samantha Cowgill (first court), Carly Sampsel (second court) and Sarah Van Voorhis (third court).

"They've hung in there," Schupp said. "It's really hard playing No. 1 singles. Usually, against teams like Olentangy and Jerome, they're strong all the way through but even teams that have one good player, Sam has to play them."

At first doubles, Schupp has Alex McNany and Ashley McDonald and at second doubles it's Shelly Lundstrom and Melena Starling.

"Players have been in and out of the lineup with injuries so now we're finally getting into more of a grove now that school has started," Schupp said. "I'm hoping in the next couple of weeks, we get a few more matches under our belt and continue to be competitive. By the time the OCC tournament comes along, we should be good to go."

Marysville plays former league foe Central Crossing on Thursday followed by the Village Academy tournament on Saturday.
