New Albany officially recognized its city status April 18 when state Rep. Anne Gonzales (R-Westerville) read a certification from the Ohio Secretary of State's office certifying a population of 7,724 residents.

Municipalities with more than 5,000 residents are considered a city within 30 days of accepting the proclamation from the secretary of state.

New Albany now must take over care and maintenance of the state routes that run through its jurisdiction now and its website will change from www.villageofnewalbany.org www.newalbanyohio.org.

Communications director Scott McAfee said the current website will continue to function and email addresses eventually will be changed, as well. Email addresses will still use the first letter of an official's first name followed by the last name, but they will be followed by @cityofnewalbany.org, McAfee said.
