A 30-year-old Columbus man led New Albany police officers on a chase Dec. 6 that began in a truck and ended on foot.

Officers at 10:29 p.m. Dec. 6 were dispatched to a business in the 8000 block of Walton Parkway on the report that a construction building next door had been broken into. The caller told police she saw someone wearing a black hooded sweatshirt taking items out of the building and loading them into a dark-colored pickup truck.

After seeing a blue pickup truck leaving the area westbound on Walton Parkway, police initiated an investigatory stop, but the truck didn't pull over.

Police followed the truck from state Route 605 into a parking lot on North High Street.

The driver drove over sidewalks and through bushes into the New Albany-Plain Local Schools campus, crashing through metal gates at the New Albany High School quad to drive into the Fodor Road parking lot.

Officers later found construction equipment that fell out of the man's truck.

From the parking lot, the man drove over a grass hill, crashed through a fence and traveled on Fodor Road south in the northbound lanes. On Ogden Woods Boulevard, he drove on the wrong side of a separated roadway.

The man got out of the truck in the 7400 block of Cummins Court. The truck was still moving and crashed into trees.

After officers threatened the man with a Taser, he stopped just west of the intersection of Yantis Road and Ogden Woods. He was charged with failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer.

Police clerk Kylie Pearson said no theft or burglary charges have been filed yet, but since the incident is still under investigation, charges potentially could be added.
